Will somebody please enlighten me?

When I want to find a certain someone on MSN or when someone pops up to say hi to me, I can’t identify that someone because:
1. he doesn’t use his name for his display name,
2. he changes his display name ever so frequently, and/or
3. he has a cutesy cartoon or something other then his own face for his display picture.
Why do people do that?
