Caught this play by Luna-id Theatre today.. Director Samantha Scott-Blackhall did a fantastic job by doing justice to Doug Wright's intentions and so did the cast of 6.. Rehaan Engineer, Daniel Jenkins and Lim Kay Tong in particular deserve a standing ovation for their brillant performance.. For the record, Quills is the first local production featuring full frontal male nudity.. Set in the Charenton Asylum in 19th century France, Quills is a fictionalised account of the incarceration of the Marquis de Sade.. Having scandalised respectable society with his blatantly libertine way of life and his salacious writings, the Marquis was banished by Emperor Napoleon to the confinements of Charenton.. This provocative play promises to leave you in deep thought.. One issue raised in the play is the power of the creative impulse -how it drives and pushes an artist on an almost involuntary level.. People create not upon a whim but as the result of a volcanic pressure seeking escape (the Marquis notes that, for him, the impulse to write is as powerful and unstoppable as the beating of his heart).. Quills also takes a stand about the role of art in society.. The perspective advocated here is that art, although potentially offensive, must be allowed to stand or fall on its own merits, and that any actions resulting from a person embracing that art are the responsibility of the individual, not the art.. Finally, Quills explores ideas of personal freedom, asking whether someone can truly be free while constrained by society's conventions.. This play is a definate must-watch..
